Werk van Loes Watchman presenteert zich aan de toeschouwer als een dichotomie. Het zwaartepunt van haar oeuvre ligt bij de schijnbare tegenstellingen die worden opgeroepen. Door verschillende posities binnen een werk te verenigingen wordt er een werkelijkheid getoond die groter is dan de som van beide delen. Middels deze vorm van dialectiek wil Loes de toeschouwer een andere blik op de werkelijkheid gunnen, de geest losweken uit geïnstitutionaliseerde denkpatronen en een alternatief bieden voor de sociale conventies die door de meeste mensen als waarheid worden aangenomen.
Dit beeldend onderzoek spitst zich toe op het ritueel in de breedste zin van het woord. Naast sociale instituties als huwelijk en geloof draait haar werk vooral om de kleine dagelijkse rite en de daarbij behorende machtsposities. Door het brede onderzoeksveld bestrijkt Loes haar oeuvre bijna het volledige spectrum aan kunstuitingen. Het kan gaan om schilderijen van figuratief tot abstract, beelden, installaties en keramiek. Er is echter een constante de zoektocht naar begrip en misschien wel geborgenheid.
Door als kunstenares op zoek te gaan naar begrip verwordt de toeschouwer van voyeur tot reisgenoot. Van passief kijken kan binnen het werk van Loes geen sprake zijn, haar werk eist soms bijna dat de toeschouwer zich een mening vormt. Maar deze mag niet gebaseerd zijn op (lege?) sociale constanten maar op basis van wederzijds begrip en solidariteit.
Loes Watchman's work presents itself as a dichotomy. It revolves around seeming oppositions that are being conjured, and tries to mold these different vieuwpoint into one. This dialectic proces reveals a new take on reality that encourages her public to see through convention and make up their own mind.
This inquiry into reality focuses on 'the ritual' in the broadest sense of the word. This means that Loes doesn't just focus on the big ínstitutions' such ass marriage but is primarily interested in daily life, and the balance of power with wich every part of live infused. The instruments of her inquiry range from paintings to sculptures and even ceramics, the one constant is the search for the sensation of coming 'home'.
Because of her practice Loes changes spectator from voyeur tot critical thinker. It is almost impossible not form an opinion, but this is not the only goal Loes strives for. Her main focus lies with the promotion of solidarity and understanding.
